Professional teeth whitening cost varies between practices for real reasons: the treatment quoted, what the quote covers and how much preparation your teeth need first. This guide explains what to look at in a whitening quote and the questions worth asking before you book. It is general information — suitability and pricing are confirmed after an assessment at the clinic.
Whitening Treatments Currently Offered at My Dental Home
We offer two kinds of professional whitening, and they are quoted differently because they work differently:
- In-clinic whitening – carried out at the practice in a single session by our team, suited to patients who want a noticeable change before an event.
- Take-home whitening kits – custom-fitted trays with professional-strength gel, worn gradually at home; also used to maintain in-clinic results.
Either option is discussed at your appointment once we have seen your teeth. More detail on how each works is on our teeth whitening page, and the wider range of appearance treatments is covered in our cosmetic dentist page for Underwood.
Fees and What They Include
Whitening is not a fixed, one-size price, so we quote it after an assessment rather than publishing a single figure. That is not to hide the cost — it is because what you need changes what treatment involves. A quote should make clear:
- Which option is being quoted — in-clinic, take-home, or both together
- How many sessions or gel syringes are included, and what a top-up costs
- The custom trays, if take-home whitening is quoted
- Any review appointment after treatment, and the cost of replacing a lost tray
It also helps to know that whitening does not change the colour of existing dental work — crowns, veneers and tooth-coloured fillings keep their shade. Where those restorations are visible, the quote may need to account for replacing them afterwards so they match your new tooth shade.
Examination and Cleaning Charges
Whitening usually needs a check first to confirm your teeth and gums are healthy enough, and a professional clean to remove surface stain and plaque that whitening alone will not shift. Both may be charged separately from the whitening itself. Ask whether an exam and clean are included in your whitening quote or sit beside it — that difference is often the main reason two quotes for "whitening" look so different. Our fee list shows our published check-up and cleaning fees.
Sensitivity
Temporary tooth sensitivity — especially to cold — is a recognised side effect of whitening, and it is usually mild and settles. It is more likely if you already have sensitive teeth, exposed roots or gum recession, which is another reason an assessment comes first. Tell your dentist about any sensitivity before starting so the plan can be adjusted.
Existing Crowns and Fillings
Whitening changes the colour of natural teeth. It does not lighten crowns, veneers or tooth-coloured fillings, so your dentist should assess existing dental work before treatment. If a restoration is visible when you smile, we will discuss whether it needs replacing after whitening and include that in your estimate.
Questions to Ask Before Booking
- Which whitening option does this quote cover, and how many sessions?
- Is the examination and clean included, or charged separately?
- What happens if I need a top-up, or if I lose a take-home tray?
- How should I expect my teeth to feel afterwards, and what can I do about sensitivity?
- Will my crowns or fillings need replacing to match afterwards?
- Which payment options and health fund rebates apply?
